Approach

My Approach

My therapeutic style is best described as client-centered and collaborative, where I serve as a guide while the client is the expert on their own thoughts, feelings, and lived experiences. I place a high value on careful listening, empathy, and professional ethics. As well, I seek to bring a trauma-informed lens to all sessions with a focus on respect, authentic presence, and creating a welcoming, inclusive space.

Central to my approach are the words of Virginia Satir: “As a therapist, I am a companion. I try to help people tune into their own wisdom.” This reflects how I see the counselling relationship, as a supportive partnership.

I have extensive training in Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy, Neuroscience and Satir in the Sand Tray and Polyvagal Theory. I often incorporate somatic practices when helpful to support regulation, emotional awareness, and explore how experiences are held in the body.

Shyann demonstrates a level of empathetic understanding that is clearly felt by her clients by her graceful way of acceptance and flexible, non-confrontational style. This unconditional regard creates a sense of safety for her clients, and they are able to take risks with their disclosures and remain open to opportunities for change.
